Sipro and Delta Robots for Food Processing: No Compromises

In the food industry, robotic automation must solve a complex equation: ensuring high production speeds while complying with increasingly stringent hygiene standards.

These are two requirements driven by different priorities—the first linked to productivity, the second to product safety— they have to coexist on the same production line, and neither can be sacrificed for the other. Striking this balance is a key factor in the competitiveness of modern manufacturing lines.

From a productivity standpoint, Delta robots have established themselves as one of the most widely adopted solutions in food automation, which today represents the largest application sector for this type of robot. Their high speed, precision, and reliability make them particularly suitable for food pick-and-place operations, where delicate, small-sized products must be handled at extremely high production rates.

From a hygiene perspective, the key requirement is the ability to clean the equipment without lengthy downtime or the risk of damaging components. The IP69K protection rating—the highest level defined by IEC 60529 for resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature water jets—allows robots to be washed directly on the production line without disassembly. This is an essential requirement wherever food safety is non-negotiable.

Over the years, Sipro has developed numerous applications for the food sector, designing solutions based on its SIAX Delta robot range. The robotic platform is combined with vision systems and end-effectors specifically engineered for each production process, as well as IP69K-rated configurations where in-line washdown capability is a design requirement from the very beginning.
This approach enables manufacturers to meet both productivity and hygiene demands without having to prioritize one over the other.

Among the applications developed by Sipro are lines equipped with four or five SIAX D3 1200 Delta robots dedicated to muffin pick-and-place operations. The robots work in cooperation with flowpack machines for the individual packaging of products, ensuring high working speed while handling baked goods with care.

Another significant application involves a line with two SIAX D5 1200 5-axis Delta robots featuring a dual universal-joint design, used for eggplant pick-and-place operations before the cooking oven. At this stage of the process, the robots also perform a quality control function, automatically rejecting eggplants that are not suitable for processing—for example, those that are excessively thick, overlapping, or damaged.
This is where the IP69K protection rating mentioned above finds one of its most direct applications: the robots can be washed directly with high-pressure cleaning lances up to 100 bar, a fundamental requirement in food-processing lines, particularly in the meat and seafood industries.

A further application involves the SIAX D3 700 HS Delta robot for biscuit handling, with automatic insertion of products into packaging boxes. In all these applications, Sipro integrate vision systems that identify the position and orientation of products on the conveyor belt. These are complemented by grippers designed and optimized by Sipro, specifically engineered for the product being handled and to achieve the number of cycles per minute required by the customer.

Muffins, eggplants, biscuits: different products, different processes, each with its own specific requirements.
Throughput, gentle handling, quality control, and hygiene are demands that must coexist—often in tension with one another—and a robotic solution must be capable of addressing them all simultaneously.

This ability to listen to every requirement of the production line, without compromising any of them, is what guides Sipro in the design of its SIAX Delta robot range: a platform engineered to adapt to both product and process, delivering—application after application—a truly uncompromising solution.
